When designing houses, we try to get to know our clients as much as we can. This two-storey residence is for a couple with two kids who were quite particular with how they wanted the house to look and feel. From the outside, very simple and unassuming, and inside, spaces that feel warm, inviting, light, and open.

The kids are quite introspective —  they loved reading books and playing instruments. Because of this, lots of reading nooks and areas for introspection were integrated throughout the house.

Since the lot is quite linear, long hallways can be unavoidable. We countered this by treating all hallways as functional spaces that they can actually use. This way, hallways don't feel like hallways. Pocket gardens are integrated in these areas to make the space feel open and less constricted. Their request for privacy had us maximize openings at the back and in between.

Considering the topography of the site, we embraced this opportunity by designing the house in split levels, not only adding a unique touch but also optimizing building construction costs.
